Dutch artist Theo Jansen demonstrates his kinetic sculptures at TED (an annual supergenius / nerd convention), built from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. His "Strandbeests" (Beach Creatures) are built to move and even "survive" on their own.

I've watched dozens of videos from previous TED events, and it's always neat stuff - but it's most of what I've seen was geared toward advances in computer science.  I was initially skeptical in the first few minutes ("it's cool, but why is this at TED?"), but by the time he got around to demonstrating the binary step counter, I was totally hooked.  It's definitely worth watching the whole video.
