Thomas Donnelly, a lifelong Fitchburg resident and candidate for mayor, has been imprisoned in a small box on the home page of the Sentinel and Enterprise website since August 9th.

“I guess any visibility is good [for the campaign],” sighed Donnelly, “but I’d really like to go home soon. Someone told me they were going to replace me with a 2-minute clip from Bierfest down at Saima Park, but I thought for sure that event was canceled. Then the other day I heard one of the reporters talking about a Latino Festival somewhere downtown. Do you think they got any video of that?”
Sentinel and Enterprise staffers blame Donnelly’s prolonged captivity on a shortage of technical staff. “There’s only like one guy who knows how to make changes to the website,” explained one staffer, “and [Jeff] McMenemy won’t let anyone near the video camera. He even takes it home on weekends. It’s ridiculous.”
Political observers are unsure of the effect Donnelly’s imprisonment may have on the upcoming primary election. “I think it’s good that Tommy is on the internet,” remarked current mayor Dan Mylott, “but he should really be out there knocking on doors. For his sake, I hope they let him out in time for the debates.”
Despite the month-long ordeal, Donnelly says he's optimistic the Sentinel will soon find new video content. "You know, there's gotta be something they can use... kids playing outside, or maybe a school event, or even a dog catching a frisbee in the park. Five minutes of a city council meeting. Anything. Seriously, anything. Anything at all would be fine," said Donnelly, adding, "If I’d known I’d be up here for a month, I probably would have worn a tie.”
