The local Fitchburg Pride newspaper has just announced (in giant exciting letters!) that Dan Mylott has decided not to seek re-election, despite having announced in April that he would be running again.
To quote the article:
"In a political bombshell just days before nomination papers are due in the City Clerk's office, Mayor Dan Mylott announced today he is not running for re-election this fall.
The announcement, first reported at fitchburgpride.com, was made during Mylott's weekly press conference at City Hall, and was kept under wraps until he made the announcement."
Not sure why a press conference was "kept under wraps". Isn't the
point of a press conference to disseminate information to the press,
which then publishes it pretty much right away? Get with it, press!
Regardless,
there are four candidates left. It'll be interesting to see where
Mylott's supporters turn. At this point it doesn't appear he's endorsed
any of the four remaining candidates, though it seems likely his
endorsement will probably find its way to either City Councilor Tom Donnelly
or former head of the Fitchburg Redevelopment Authority Lisa Wong.
Bombastic Councilor Ted DeSalvatore hasn't had a particularly friendly
relationship with the Mayor, and underdog Ronald Dionne is largely an
unknown.
No indication yet of what Mr. Mylott will be doing in
place of being mayor, but the smart money's on him adopting a rigorous
beard-trimming regimen and maybe buying some new shoes.
